Are you suffering from symptoms of SIRVA after a recent Flu Shot?

Everything You Need to Know - and how to get Help

What is SIRVA?

Vaccines are meant to keep people healthy, but where on the body they are administered can make the difference between helping and harming.

SIRVA, an acronym for shoulder injury related to vaccine administration, is caused by the injection of a vaccine into the tissue underneath the shoulder’s deltoid muscle, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Putting an injection there instead of inside the muscle can result in severe pain and even loss of motion in the arm. For some patients, those symptoms can result in lifelong pain.

Is SIRVA Common?

SIRVA is so common that a special vaccine court within the U.S. Court of Federal Claims has been created to hear vaccine injury claims. To date, about $4.4 billion has been paid out to 7,600 patients with vaccine issues, according to the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. And the total number of claims are increasing every year. In 2014, there were 633 claims compared to 1,282 in 2019, according to the program.

The average settlement amount for a SIRVA injury is approximately $60k, which goes to the client 100%.

What are the symptoms of SIRVA?

The main symptoms of SIRVA include persistent shoulder pain, a limited range of motion of the shoulder joint, and pain upon shoulder movement.

The keys to distinguishing SIRVA are that the symptoms typically begin within 48 hours of vaccine administration and that they do not improve with ibuprofen or NSAIDs. Patients will often visit their physician months later because they are not able to carry out daily tasks that were possible before the vaccination. Patients are often diagnosed with inflammatory injuries such as bursitis, rotator cuff tears, and adhesive capsulitis.
