Flu Shots Are Recommended for "Bad Flu Season"

A report out of the Harvard Medical School has estimated, based on expert reporting, that we will experience an active, and possibly severe, flu season. This projection is based on data from Australia, where the flu season is about to end. Australia endured a severe flu season where nearly 300,000 patients had laboratory-confirmed influenza, which is a record number of cases. Flu outbreaks in the Southern Hemisphere happen during our summers, and they often give us a clue as to what we should expect when the flu lands on our shores in the fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instructs everyone over the age of 6 months to get the flu vaccine. There are medical exceptions for those who have had a life-threatening reaction to a flu shot in the past. Such life-threatening reactions would be a host of autoimmune diseases including Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), multiple sclerosis (MS), myositis, and dermatomyositis. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, the perfect time to get the flu shot is around the end of October and into the beginning of November in order for immunity to last throughout the entirety of the flu season. When getting your flu shot this season, pay particular attention to any adverse reactions you may experience. If you experience an adverse reaction, please document it and discuss it with one of our vaccine attorneys. If you or a loved one has experienced prolonged shoulder pain after a recent flu shot or an autoimmune diseases (Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), multiple sclerosis (MS), myositis, and dermatomyositis), please contact our vaccine attorney who can discuss the prospects of your particular case.
